Why does sublimation printing need special coating?

The well-known sublimation blank products (ceramic mug, metal key fastener, paper puzzle...) are factory coated with special sublimation laquer. This sublicoat provides the printability, the sublimation ink will sublimating onto this layer during heat transfer. If you would like to print on wider range than our standard stocked sublimation products then you will need this pre-coating lacquer. Only for hard materials.

The Primjet sublimation pre-coating is water-based. The liquid does not contain harmful and unpleasant-smelling solvents.

Which products can be pre-treated with Primjet pre coat?

The basic criteria of sublimation printing that the product mus tolerate the 180-190 °C high temperature for 60-100 seconds. Therefore this printing technology impossible on some plastic materials, for example PVC. Take this into account when ordering the varnish for the product you want to produce! Our customers primarily use the coating on ceramic, glass, wood, and metal objects.

Coating procedure

The sublimation coating can be applicatable with compressor and spray gun or painting roller too. Of corse the coverage will better with spray gun.
With compressed air and spray gun: 20 - 25 m²
With painting roller: 15-20 m²

Step 1. The surface to be pre-treated must be clean and dry. When cleaning or washing the surface, avoid mechanical damage and do not use strong cleaning agents.
Step 2. If the surface is extremely smooth, tarnish it with fine sandpaper.
Step 3. Apply pre-coat using roller or paint gun. It is recommended to put two thin layers of lacquer. Wait for the first layer to dry before applying the second layer.
Step 4. Dry the object in a heat press, oven, or with a heat gun for about 30 minutes at 150 °C.
