Sublimation
24/09/2026 13:20 Signdepot

Sublimation printing is one of the most popular technologies for creating personalized gifts, promotional products, and home decor. Mugs, water bottles, thermoses, glasses, phone cases, and even decorative objects can all be personalized. However, achieving an excellent result requires more than just a good printer and the right sublimation ink – appropriate accessories also play a key role.

One such increasingly popular tool is sublimation shrink film, which can significantly improve print quality in many cases – especially on curved or cylindrical surfaces.

In this blog post, we explain in detail what sublimation shrink wrap is, how it works, when to use it, and what its advantages and disadvantages are; we also walk you through the correct usage step by step.

What is sublimation shrink film?

Sublimation shrink film (or shrink wrap) is a special heat-shrinkable plastic film or sleeve used to hold sublimation paper firmly and evenly in place.

Its operating principle is extremely simple:

After placing the sublimation transfer paper on the product and securing it with heat-resistant tape, the pull the shink film over the entire object. Then use a heat gun to shrink the film, in order to wrap it tightly around the entire surface. This ensures that the paper maintains close contact with the object at every point – a crucial factor for the sublimation process. Thus, the film does not play a role in the printing itself but it provides uniform pressure throughout the heat treatment.

Why is even pressure important?

During sublimation, the ink turns into a gas at high temperatures and then bonds with the surface of the specially coated product. However, three conditions must be met simultaneously for this to occur:

  • the right temperature
  • the right duration
  • adequate and even pressure.

If the paper lifts off the surface – even by just a few tenths of a millimeter – it can result in:

  • a blurred print
  • loss of detail
  • ghosting
  • faded areas
  • uneven colors

Shrink wrap is designed to solve precisely this problem.

What can sublimation shrink film be used for?

It is primarily recommended for products with non-flat surfaces. Examples include:

  • ceramic mugs
  • enamel mugs
  • stainless steel water bottles
  • thermos flasks
  • tumblers
  • glass bottles
  • full-wrap mug designs
  • conical cups
  • smaller cylindrical objects.

For flat products—such as mousepads, aluminum panels, or textile items—shrink wrap is generally not required, as the heat press ensures even pressure.

Tools you need

Shrink wrap is just one part of the entire process. For successful sublimation, you will also need the following items:

  • sublimation printer
  • sublimation ink
  • sublimation paper
  • sublimation-ready product
  • heat-resistant tape
  • sublimation shrink film
  • heat gun
  • sublimation oven or suitable heat press
  • heat-resistant gloves (recommended).

The following products are not required but could make your job easier:

  • Extra large binder clip
  • Stand with ruler markings – for mugs, glasses, and water bottles
  • Silicone stand – for mugs, glasses, and water bottles
  • Ruler for pen sublimation

How to use sublimation shrink film?

1. Print the graphic
Always print the desired design onto sublimation paper in mirror image. Use high-quality sublimation ink, the appropriate ICC color profile, and high-quality sublimation transfer paper, as these influence the final result just as much as the shrink film.

2. Place the sublimation transfer paper
Align the graphic precisely with the product. Secure it with heat-resistant tape to prevent the sublimation paper from shifting. This is particularly important for full-wrap mugs.

3. Cover it in sublimation shrink wrap
Choose the size of the film so that it can be easily slipped over the product. If it is too tight, it will be difficult to apply; if it is too large, shrinking will take longer.

4. Shrink it on using a heat gun

Keep the heat gun moving constantly. Do not aim it at the same spot for too long, as:

  • the film could overheat
  • it could become deformed
  • the paper could suffer premature damage.

The goal is for the film to lie taut against the product over its entire surface.

5. Sublimation
The actual heat treatment follows. The shrink wrap ensures uniform clamping throughout the entire process.

6. Cooling and removal
Once the printing is finished and has cooled safely, the film can simply be cut or peeled off. Then, remove the sublimation paper as well.

Advantages of sublimation shrink wrap

The popularity of shrink wrap is no coincidence.

Key benefits:

  • ensures even pressure;
  • reduces the number of defective prints;
  • can result in more vibrant colors;
  • minimizes the occurrence of ghosting;
  • works well on curved surfaces;
  • easy-to-master technology;
  • relatively inexpensive accessory.

Many users experienced a dramatic improvement, particularly with full-wrap designs on mugs and tumblers.

Are there disadvantages?

Yes. While it is an extremely useful tool, it is not the best choice for every situation.

Additional workflow step
It must be applied to each individual product and then shrunk onto it using a heat gun. This can be more time-consuming.

Single-use
The shrink wrap cannot be reused; a new sheet is required for every item.

Consumable
It is an ongoing cost that you should factor into the price of the finished product.

Slower for large-scale production
If producing hundreds of mugs a day, a professional vacuum press with silicone sleeves or an industrial mug heat press might be a much faster solution.

Common mistakes

Most problems do not stem from the film itself.

The most common errors:

  • film that is too loose;
  • excessive heating;
  • poorly secured paper;
  • too much adhesive tape;
  • incorrect baking temperature;
  • heat treatment that is too short or too long.

Shrink wrap cannot correct poor print settings or faulty sublimation parameters.

Who is it recommended for?

Shrink film is an excellent choice for:

  • beginners
  • hobbyists
  • gift makers
  • small businesses
  • Etsy and online shop owners
  • creators of custom orders.

It is particularly worthwhile when minimizing errors and achieving a striking final result are important.

For whom might it not be worth it?

It does not offer a genuine advantage in every workflow. If you use a heat press exclusively for flat-surfaced products, shrink wrap is unnecessary. In large-scale production, the additional preparation time may make it less cost-effective than other professional solutions.

Summary

Sublimation shrink wrap is a easy-to-use yet highly useful tool designed primarily to ensure even pressure throughout the entire sublimation process. This helps minimize ghosting, enhances color vibrancy, and results in a more reliable, higher-quality print – especially on curved or cylindrical surfaces.

However, it is important to point out: shrink wrap is no substitute for proper print settings, high-quality materials, or the correct choice of temperature and time. It is not a magic cure-all, but rather an accessory that – when used correctly – helps achieve more consistent results.

If you create custom mugs, water bottles, tumblers, or other curved items as a hobbyist or a small business, shrink film can be a worthwhile investment. However, if you are working in large batches under industrial conditions, it is worth considering whether a professional heat press with traditional heat pads might offer a more efficient solution in terms of workflow speed.

Overall, sublimation shrink wrap is an affordable, easy-to-use tool that, under the right conditions, can contribute to producing higher-quality and more consistent sublimation prints.
